Standby Translator Privacy Policy

Effective date: 2026-04-25

Standby Translator is a Chrome extension that translates selected or pasted text using a local Ollama or llama.cpp endpoint on localhost or 127.0.0.1.

Data the Extension Handles

Standby Translator may handle:

  • Text selected by the user on a web page.
  • Text pasted by the user into the extension popup.
  • Translation results returned by the local inference endpoint.
  • Extension settings, including language choices, prompt templates, model name, endpoint URL, and UI preferences.
  • Local translation cache entries used to speed up repeated translations.

How Data Is Used

The extension uses selected or pasted text only to provide translation features requested by the user.

Settings are used to configure the translation experience. Cached translations are used to make repeated translations faster and to support the recent words view and Markdown word-card export.

Where Data Is Sent

Translation requests are sent only to a local inference endpoint allowed by the extension permissions:

http://localhost:11434
http://127.0.0.1:11434

The options page lets the user choose supported local endpoint forms, such as localhost and 127.0.0.1, and whether the local server uses Ollama or llama.cpp APIs. Remote endpoints are not supported by this extension’s host permissions.

Standby Translator does not send translation text, browsing data, settings, or cache entries to developer-controlled servers.

Local Storage

Standby Translator stores settings, prompt templates, and cached translations using Chrome storage on the user’s device/browser profile.

The user can clear cached translations from the options page.

Data Sharing

Standby Translator does not sell user data.

Standby Translator does not share user data with third parties for advertising, analytics, creditworthiness, or unrelated purposes.

Data may be transmitted to the supported local inference endpoint solely to provide translation functionality.

Analytics and Tracking

Standby Translator does not include analytics, tracking pixels, advertising SDKs, or telemetry.

Remote Code

Standby Translator does not load or execute remotely hosted JavaScript. It only sends API requests to supported local inference endpoints on localhost or 127.0.0.1.

User Control

Users can:

  • Choose the supported local endpoint type, endpoint URL, and model.
  • Edit prompt templates.
  • Force re-translate text to refresh a cached result.
  • Clear the local translation cache.
  • Remove the extension from Chrome to delete extension-managed local data according to Chrome’s extension storage behavior.
